CROSSINGS

ARTIST STATEMENT

Crossings reflects the moments of different transitions we experience in life—the places where we hesitate, unsure whether to move forward, at times where we are held back by obstacles both external and internal. I wanted the series to explore the tension between routine and the desire for change. I also wanted to highlight the sense of being trapped in an unyielding world while hinting at the hope that lies beyond the haze.

The figures tread familiar yet isolating paths, each step echoing the repetitive rhythm of daily life. Void of buildings, and other signs of vitality, the stark streets feel like simulations, amplifying the sense of monotony. The quiet minimalism of these scenes highlights the emotional weight of indecision and the internal struggle to break free.

Streetlights and signals, particularly the red and green walk signs, embody mixed messages. They alternately urge us forward or hold us back, mirroring the push-pull of decision-making. Are these signals external rules we must follow, or are they reflections of our own doubts and fears? Road arrows and signs further deepen the narrative, simultaneously guiding and provoking reflection on choices not yet made.

The fog becomes a metaphor for life’s uncertainties, narrowing our vision and amplifying the fear of missteps. It clouds the horizon, making each crossing feel endless and directionless. Yet within the fog lies opportunity—a hint of blue sky breaking through above, reminding us that clarity and transformation are possible if we dare to move forward.

Bare trees, stripped to their essence, stand as reminders of life’s constant cycles—death, stillness, and eventual renewal. Their stark beauty reflects the possibility of growth and change, even in the most desolate moments. Wet pavements and patches of ice underfoot emphasize life’s fragility and the risks inherent in each step.

At its heart, Crossings examines the crossroads we all face—moments when fear, doubt, or comfort with the familiar hold us back. The series challenges viewers to confront the invisible barriers we create, questioning whether it is the world or ourselves that stop us from moving forward.

While these images capture a sense of isolation and routine, they also speak to resilience and the human capacity for change. Each crossing is a chance to step forward despite uncertainty, a reminder that the fog will eventually lift. In this stark, unsettling world, there is beauty and hope—a promise of transformation waiting on the other side.

Ultimately, Crossings invites viewers to consider their own journeys. What signals do you follow? What paths do you take? And how will you navigate the fog to find the life you’re meant to live?
